IS BANNING ABORTION
POINTLESS?
By Matt Greiner
Most
pro-lifers and Christians would consider this title blasphemous. Those of you
who know me probably think I’ve lost it, but hang in there, I promise I have a
valid point. I have been a Christian for only about 9 years, but for the whole
of my life I have deeply believed that abortion is the theft and destruction of
human life. My parents are strongly pro-life and I grew up in a pro-life church.
So why would I think that banning abortion is pointless?
First, I can say that the Bible, my parents and my
peers have instilled, sharpened, and solidified my morals and values. I can tell
you who has not taught me any morals and values, and that would be the
government. However, the government is not supposed to instill
values, but to reflect
the values of American citizens.
The
people who look to the President or their Senators for moral guidance will
unfortunately not find what they are looking for and will be sadly disappointed.
The Bible is the only real “moral lighthouse” and somehow people keep ignoring
it. God’s Word has taught me the importance of life and for all things He has
created. I certainly can not count on the government to teach me that. In
general, politicians work harder to convince me that God does not
exist!
However, they do look after my basic
needs (even though that probably wouldn’t be the case if the Constitution was
not in place).
I
am thankful that the government has laws in place that punish murder. No matter
how another person is murdered, the offender is still punished for the end
result of their offense. In certain circumstances an offender might be punished
for other crimes such as gun law violations, but the point is that murder is the
punishable offense.
So,
whether a person was killed by another human by a being beaten with a stick,
drowned, cement shoes or other means, they are not punished for the method used,
but for the end result - murder.
So
with this in mind, why should the government ban another “method” of taking
life?
After
all, from a legislative perspective what pro-lifers want banned is the practice
of abortion. (I say “practice” because certain definitions of abortion include
natural causes such as miscarriage.)
What
needs to take place is the extension of the right to “life, liberty, and the
pursuit of happiness” to be passed on to an unborn child. If the government
would simply recognize that all persons, born and unborn, were “endowed by their
creator” with these “unalienable rights”, then abortion would be just another
means that causes murder.
Our
government obviously needs to extend basic liberties to unborn children, the
future citizens of the United
States. However, the government is in a
stranglehold by two major problems that grip society - relativism and disrespect
for human life.
Relativism is a theory that states
“conceptions of truth and moral values are not absolute but are relative to the
persons or groups holding them” (www.answers.com). In other words, a person can
believe whatever they want to believe and no one can tell them otherwise because
it is philosophically impossible. This is not going to be a lengthy diatribe on
relativism (even though the definition of relativism shoots itself in the foot),
but to show as simply as possible how it plays out in the pro-life struggle.
Currently,
when a woman is pregnant and the pregnancy is wanted, then it somehow becomes a
baby. However, when the pregnancy is unwanted, it becomes a “fetus” and
“terminating the pregnancy” becomes an attractive option. So, pregnancy is the
same for every woman from a biological sense, so why does one consider it a baby
and the other refer to it as a fetus (again, by definition literally means
“unborn young”). Relativism is exactly how this dual definition is possible.
Relativism states that “it becomes a baby when the mother so chooses” (wow,
another example of freedom of choice). From a spiritual perspective, relativism
is a fancy name for “killing one’s conscience”. Kill the voice that tells you
right from wrong and you’re good! Sounds pretty good doesn’t it? Apparently
millions of people think so because it is the dominating mindset in
America
today.
Problem number two is the disrespect
for life in any form. Turn
on the news today and you see plenty of kids being convicted for murder. Eve
Carson from UNC and Sean Taylor are just two current examples out of thousands
where people were murdered by juveniles. Somehow the taking of a human life has
become a moot point. So many factors come into play in the ‘why this happens’ it
would take a book to list them all. Music, violent video games, the media, and
gangs are all possible causes of the continued decline of respect for life.
However, I would argue that the lack of solid parental influence and exposure to
the Bible are two major factors involved here. Without the absolute truth of the
Bible, relativism will infect one’s mind with lies and then anything becomes
fair game from a moral and ethical perspective.
Surprisingly, in spite of relativism and
the disrespect for life, I believe that a Constitutional amendment extending the
right of life to the unborn is well within our reach. All too often Americans
either forget or don’t understand the basics of how our government works. The
President is not the hope for America and he or she is not able to
amend the Constitution. People need
to stop making such a big deal about a statesman! Americans need to focus on
Congress, the real lawmakers who wield the real power. We elect our
Representatives and Senators on the premise that they will faithfully represent
those who elect them. So until American voices are loud enough to be heard
nothing will be done.
Americans
need to rally together and start putting pressure on Congress. Congress needs to
understand that they need to comply or they will be facing their last term. That
is the beauty of our government. No violence is needed, votes are what truly
speak. If the current Congressmen and women do not fairly represent their
people, at the next election they will simply find someone who will! Those who
strongly hold to the belief that life begins in the womb need to seriously rally
together and create a movement!
In
John 10:10, Jesus states that the devil comes to “steal, kill, and destroy” and
Jesus came to give life and give it abundantly! We see the enemy, the devil,
coming against life in every form. He lies to us in many ways, especially
through the philosophy of relativism (a huge lie), and we see the devil trying
to kill anything that is true and revolves around life. However, the “church
universal”, (which is the Body of Christ, or simply called “Christians”), is
equipped to stand up against evil and stand for truth and for life. Christians
are members of the Kingdom of Heaven and the Bible says that the gates
of hell will not prevail against it.
So, with that in mind, what are we
waiting for? Didn’t Jesus’ promise of abundant life apply to unborn children as
much as it does for us? The unborn deserve someone to fight for them. Do the
unborn children deserve the promise of “life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of happiness” as well
as Jesus’ promise of abundant life? Using Martin Luther King, Jr. as an example,
we need to peacefully rally together and have our voices heard! Remember, all
the people who are in this war over abortion were the ones whose mothers didn’t
have them aborted. Our mothers chose to give us life, wouldn’t it be arrogant to
not pass that blessing on to the next generation of unborn children? It won’t be
easy, but by the grace of God we can change this if we want to.
So,
who’s up for the challenge???
