Have
You So Soon Forgotten?
9/21/03
People have always had a serious problem
remembering what's important!
Short lived commitments, shallow promises and
quickly forgetting what God has done thrive within the evil nature of man!
Read Gen. 40:1-23 - the cupbearer did not remember Joseph.
Read Ex. 24:18, 31:18, 32:1-24 - how could the people and Aaron so
quickly forget the greatness of God and Moses!?
Our evil nature sure knows how to twist our memory of things!
Num. 11:1 Now the people complained about their
hardships in the hearing of the LORD, and when he heard them his anger was
aroused. Then fire from the LORD burned among them and consumed some of the
outskirts of the camp. 2 When the people cried out to Moses, he
prayed to the LORD and the fire died down. 3 So that place was
called Taberah, because fire from the LORD had burned among them.
4 The rabble with them began to crave
other food, and again the Israelites started wailing and said, “If only we had
meat to eat! 5 We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no
cost—also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. 6
But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!”
The way we treat others will also indicate whether or not we have soon
forgotten what our former way of life was like.
Titus 3:1 Remind the people to be subject to
rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good, 2
to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility
toward all men.
3 At one time we too were
foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and
pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. 4
But when the kindness and love of God our Savior appeared, 5 he
saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his
mercy.
Five days is all it took to change from
“Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord” to “Crucify Him!”
Lk. 19:28 After Jesus had said this, he went on ahead, going up to
Jerusalem. 29 As he approached Bethphage and Bethany at the hill
called the Mount of Olives, he sent two of his disciples, saying to them, 30
“Go to the village ahead of you, and as you enter it, you will find a colt tied
there, which no one has ever ridden. Untie it and bring it here. 31
If anyone asks you, ‘Why are you untying it?’ tell him, ‘The Lord needs it.’”
32 Those who were sent ahead went and found it just as he had
told them. 33 As they were untying the colt, its owners asked them,
“Why are you untying the colt?”
34 They replied, “The Lord needs it.”
35 They brought it to Jesus, threw their cloaks on the colt and
put Jesus on it. 36 As he went along, people spread their cloaks on
the road.
37 When he came near the place where the road goes down the Mount
of Olives, the whole crowd of disciples began joyfully to praise God in loud
voices for all the miracles they had seen:
38 “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”
“Peace in heaven and glory in the highest!”
Mat. 27:15 Now it was the governor’s custom at the Feast to release a
prisoner chosen by the crowd. 16 At that time they had a notorious
prisoner, called Barabbas. 17 So when the crowd had gathered, Pilate
asked them, “Which one do you want me to release to you: Barabbas, or Jesus who
is called Christ?” 18 For he knew it was out of envy that they had
handed Jesus over to him.
19 While Pilate was sitting on the judge’s seat, his wife sent
him this message: “Don’t have anything to do with that innocent man, for I have
suffered a great deal today in a dream because of him.”
20 But the chief priests and the elders persuaded the crowd to
ask for Barabbas and to have Jesus executed.
21 “Which of the two do you want me to release to you?” asked the
governor.
“Barabbas,” they answered.
22 “What shall I do, then, with Jesus who is called Christ?”
Pilate asked.
They all answered, “Crucify him!”
23 “Why? What crime has he committed?” asked Pilate.
But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!”
Stones of remembrance.
Jos. 4:1 When the whole nation had finished crossing the Jordan, the LORD
said to Joshua, 2 “Choose twelve men from among the people, one from
each tribe, 3 and tell them to take up twelve stones from the middle
of the Jordan from right where the priests stood and to carry them over with
you and put them down at the place where you stay tonight.”
4 So Joshua called together the twelve men he had appointed from
the Israelites, one from each tribe, 5 and said to them, “Go over
before the ark of the LORD your God into the middle of the Jordan. Each of you
is to take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of
the Israelites, 6 to serve as a sign among you. In the future, when
your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean?’ 7 tell them that
the flow of the Jordan was cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD.
When it crossed the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. These stones
are to be a memorial to the people of Israel forever.”
8 So the Israelites did as Joshua commanded them. They took
twelve stones from the middle of the Jordan, according to the number of the
tribes of the Israelites, as the LORD had told Joshua; and they carried them
over with them to their camp, where they put them down. 9 Joshua set
up the twelve stones that had been in the middle of the Jordan at the spot
where the priests who carried the Ark of the Covenant had stood. And they are
there to this day.
Ex. 12:24 “Obey these instructions as a lasting ordinance for you and your
descendants. 25 When you enter the land that the LORD will give you
as he promised, observe this ceremony. 26 And when your children ask
you, ‘What does this ceremony mean to you?’ 27 then tell them, ‘It
is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, who passed over the houses of the
Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians.’”
Then the people bowed down and worshiped. 28 The Israelites did just
what the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron.
