Jesus
Is Our Covenant
Greatly
Superior To The Old!
10/26/03
Since the beginning of the church there has
been this religious war within the church fueled by Satan himself to defeat the
children of God and keep in bondage those whom Jesus totally set free!
This religious bondage is the mixing of two
covenants that cannot be done!
Gal. 4:21 Tell me, you who want to be under the law, are you not aware of
what the law says? 22 For it is written that Abraham had two sons,
one by the slave woman and the other by the free woman. 23 His son
by the slave woman was born in the ordinary way; but his son by the free woman
was born as the result of a promise. 24 These things may be
taken figuratively, for the women represent two covenants. One
covenant is from Mount Sinai and bears children who are to be slaves: This is
Hagar. 25 Now Hagar stands for Mount Sinai in Arabia and corresponds
to the present city of Jerusalem, because she is in slavery with her children. 26
But the Jerusalem that is above is free, and she is our mother. 27
For it is written:
“Be glad, O barren woman, who bears no children; break forth and cry aloud,
you who have no labor pains; because more are the children of the desolate
woman than of her who has a husband.”
28 Now you, brothers, like Isaac, are children of promise. 29
At that time the son born in the ordinary way persecuted the son born by the
power of the Spirit. It is the same now. 30 But what does the
Scripture say? “Get rid of the slave woman and her son, for the slave woman’s
son will never share in the inheritance with the free woman’s son.” 31
Therefore, brothers, we are not children of the slave woman, but of the free
woman.
Here are some examples of this problem in the
early church...
Acts 15:1 Some men came down from Judea to Antioch and were teaching the
brothers: “Unless you are circumcised, according to the custom taught by Moses,
you cannot be saved.” 2 This brought Paul and Barnabas into sharp
dispute and debate with them. So Paul and Barnabas were appointed, along with
some other believers, to go up to Jerusalem to see the apostles and elders
about this question.
Gal. 2:1 Fourteen years later I went up again to Jerusalem, this time with
Barnabas. I took Titus along also. 2 I went in response to a
revelation and set before them the gospel that I preach among the Gentiles. But
I did this privately to those who seemed to be leaders, for fear that I was
running or had run my race in vain. 3 Yet not even Titus, who was
with me, was compelled to be circumcised, even though he was a Greek. 4
This matter arose because some false brothers had infiltrated our ranks to spy
on the freedom we have in Christ Jesus and to make us slaves. 5 We
did not give in to them for a moment, so that the truth of the gospel might
remain with you.
Gal. 2:11 When Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he
was clearly in the wrong. 12 Before certain men came from James, he
used to eat with the Gentiles. But when they arrived, he began to draw back and
separate himself from the Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged
to the circumcision group. 13 The other Jews joined him in his
hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy even Barnabas was led astray. 14
When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the gospel, I
said to Peter in front of them all, “You are a Jew, yet you live like a Gentile
and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles to follow Jewish
customs? 15 “We who are Jews by birth and not ‘Gentile sinners’ 16
know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus
Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified
by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law
no one will be justified.
Gal. 3:1 You foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes
Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. 2 I would like to
learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by observing the law,
or by believing what you heard? 3 Are you so foolish? After
beginning with the Spirit, are you now trying to attain your goal by human
effort? 4 Have you suffered so much for nothing—if it really was for
nothing? 5 Does God give you his Spirit and work miracles among you
because you observe the law, or because you believe what you heard?
Gal. 5:1 It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then,
and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. 2
Mark my words! I, Paul, tell you that if you let yourselves be circumcised,
Christ will be of no value to you at all. 3 Again I declare to every
man who lets himself be circumcised that he is obligated to obey the whole law.
4 You who are trying to be justified by law have been alienated from
Christ; you have fallen away from grace. 5 But by faith we eagerly
await through the Spirit the righteousness for which we hope. 6 For
in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only
thing that counts is faith expressing itself through love. 7 You
were running a good race. Who cut in on you and kept you from obeying the
truth? 8 That kind of persuasion does not come from the one who
calls you. 9 “A little yeast works through the whole batch of
dough.” 10 I am confident in the Lord that you will take no other
view. The one who is throwing you into confusion will pay the penalty, whoever
he may be. 11 Brothers, if I am still preaching circumcision, why am
I still being persecuted? In that case the offense of the cross has been
abolished. 12 As for those agitators, I wish they would go the whole
way and emasculate themselves!
Col. 2:16 Therefore do not let anyone judge you by what you eat or drink, or
with regard to a religious festival, a New Moon celebration or a Sabbath day. 17
These are a shadow of the things that were to come; the reality, however, is
found in Christ. 18 Do not let anyone who delights in false humility
and the worship of angels disqualify you for the prize. Such a
person goes into great detail about what he has seen, and his unspiritual mind
puffs him up with idle notions. 19 He has lost connection with the
Head, from whom the whole body, supported and held together by its ligaments
and sinews, grows as God causes it to grow. 20 Since you died with
Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged
to it, do you submit to its rules: 21 “Do not handle! Do not taste!
Do not touch!”? 22 These are all destined to perish with use,
because they are based on human commands and teachings. 23 Such
regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-imposed
worship, their false humility and their harsh treatment of the body, but they
lack any value in restraining sensual indulgence.
Heb. 2:2 For if the message spoken by angels was
binding, and every violation and disobedience received its just punishment, 3
how shall we escape if we ignore such a great salvation?
Jesus established a "New Covenant"
with no intention of mixing the two!
There is a verse that is greatly misunderstood by many Christians...
Mat. 5:17 “Do not think that I have come to abolish
the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18
I tell you the truth, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest
letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law
until everything is accomplished.
Ro. 6:14 For sin shall not be your master, because
you are not under law, but under grace.
Rom. 7:1 Do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to men who know the
law—that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives? 2
For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is
alive, but if her husband dies, she is released from the law of marriage. 3
So then, if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she is
called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law
and is not an adulteress, even though she marries another man. 4 So,
my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Christ, that you
might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we
might bear fruit to God. 5 For when we were controlled by the sinful
nature, the sinful passions aroused by the law were at work in our bodies, so
that we bore fruit for death. 6 But now, by dying to what once bound
us, we have been released from the law so that we serve in the new way of the
Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code.
Read Heb. 7:11-10:18
2 Cor. 3:5 Not that we are competent in ourselves to claim anything for
ourselves, but our competence comes from God. 6 He has made us
competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the
Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life. 7 Now if
the ministry that brought death, which was engraved in letters on stone, came
with glory, so that the Israelites could not look steadily at the face of Moses
because of its glory, fading though it was, 8 will not the ministry
of the Spirit be even more glorious? 9 If the ministry that condemns
men is glorious, how much more glorious is the ministry that brings
righteousness! 10 For what was glorious has no glory now in
comparison with the surpassing glory. 11 And if what was fading away
came with glory, how much greater is the glory of that which lasts!
1 Cor. 11:23 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: The
Lord Jesus, on the night he was betrayed, took bread, 24 and when he
had given thanks, he broke it and said, “This is my body, which is for you; do
this in remembrance of me.” 25 In the same way, after supper he took
the cup, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, whenever
you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For whenever you eat this
bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
