Three Greatest Sins
6/29/03
Jo. 16:5 “Now I am going to him who sent me, yet none of you asks me, ‘Where
are you going?’ 6 Because I have said these things, you are filled
with grief. 7 But I tell you the truth: It is for your good that I
am going away. Unless I go away, the Counselor will not come to you; but if I
go, I will send him to you. 8 When he comes, he will convict the
world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9
in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; 10 in
regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me
no longer; 11 and in regard to judgment, because the prince of this world now
stands condemned.
I want to share with you today the three
greatest sins--unbelief, fear and doubt.
Read Num. 13-14.
In the very beginning Eve thought she was being cheated! She didn't believe
God she believed the devil!
Gen. 3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any
of the wild animals the LORD God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God
really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden’?”
2 The woman said to the serpent, “We
may eat fruit from the trees in the garden, 3 but God did say, ‘You
must not eat fruit from the tree that is in the middle of the garden, and you
must not touch it, or you will die.’”
4 “You will not surely die,” the
serpent said to the woman. 5 “For God knows that when you eat of it
your eyes will be opened, and you will be like God, knowing good and evil.”
6 When the woman saw that the fruit of
the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and also desirable for
gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband,
who was with her, and he ate it. 7 Then the eyes of both of them
were opened, and they realized they were naked; so they sewed fig leaves
together and made coverings for themselves.
Our relationship with Jesus Christ starts
with faith, is built on faith, and ends on this earth in faith!
Jo. 6:26 Jesus answered, “I tell you the truth,
you are looking for me, not because you saw miraculous signs but because you
ate the loaves and had your fill. 27 Do not work for food that
spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will
give you. On him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.”
28 Then they asked him, “What must we
do to do the works God requires?”
29 Jesus answered, “The work of
God is this: to believe in the one he has sent.”
Heb. 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to
please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and
that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
Nothing touches the heart of God more than
the one who believes Him no matter what.
Rom. 4:18 Against all hope, Abraham in hope
believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to
him, “So shall your offspring be.” 19 Without weakening in his
faith, he faced the fact that his body was as good as dead—since he was about a
hundred years old—and that Sarah’s womb was also dead. 20 Yet he did
not waver through unbelief regarding the promise of God, but was strengthened
in his faith and gave glory to God, 21 being fully persuaded that
God had power to do what he had promised. 22 This is why “it was
credited to him as righteousness.” 23 The words “it was credited to
him” were written not for him alone, 24 but also for us, to whom God
will credit righteousness—for us who believe in him who raised Jesus our Lord
from the dead. 25 He was delivered over to death for our sins and
was raised to life for our justification.
Mat. 15:21 Leaving that place, Jesus withdrew to
the region of Tyre and Sidon. 22 A Canaanite woman from that
vicinity came to him, crying out, “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me! My
daughter is suffering terribly from demon-possession.”
23 Jesus did not answer a word. So his
disciples came to him and urged him, “Send her away, for she keeps crying out
after us.”
24 He answered, “I was sent only to the
lost sheep of Israel.”
25 The woman came and knelt before him.
“Lord, help me!” she said.
26 He replied, “It is not right to take
the children’s bread and toss it to their dogs.”
27 “Yes, Lord,” she said, “but even the
dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’ table.”
28 Then Jesus answered, “Woman, you
have great faith! Your request is granted.” And her daughter was healed from
that very hour.
Is your relationship with the Living God
built on performance or faith?
Lk. 15:11 Jesus continued: “There was a man who had two sons. 12
The younger one said to his father, ‘Father, give me my share of the estate.’
So he divided his property between them.
13 “Not long after that, the younger son got together all he had,
set off for a distant country and there squandered his wealth in wild living. 14
After he had spent everything, there was a severe famine in that whole country,
and he began to be in need. 15 So he went and hired himself out to a
citizen of that country, who sent him to his fields to feed pigs. 16
He longed to fill his stomach with the pods that the pigs were eating, but no
one gave him anything.
17 “When he came to his senses, he said, ‘How many of my father’s
hired men have food to spare, and here I am starving to death! 18 I
will set out and go back to my father and say to him: Father, I have sinned
against heaven and against you. 19 I am no longer worthy to be
called your son; make me like one of your hired men.’ 20 So he got
up and went to his father.
“But while he was still a long way off, his father saw him and was filled with
compassion for him; he ran to his son, threw his arms around him and kissed
him.
21 “The son said to him, ‘Father, I have sinned against heaven
and against you. I am no longer worthy to be called your son.’
22 “But the father said to his servants, ‘Quick! Bring the best
robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet. 23
Bring the fattened calf and kill it. Let’s have a feast and celebrate. 24
For this son of mine was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is found.’ So
they began to celebrate.
25 “Meanwhile, the older son was in the field. When he came near
the house, he heard music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the
servants and asked him what was going on. 27 ‘Your brother has
come,’ he replied, ‘and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has
him back safe and sound.’
28 “The older brother became angry and refused to go in. So his
father went out and pleaded with him. 29 But he answered his father,
‘Look! All these years I’ve been slaving for you and never disobeyed your
orders. Yet you never gave me even a young goat so I could celebrate with my
friends. 30 But when this son of yours who has squandered your
property with prostitutes comes home, you kill the fattened calf for him!’
31 “‘My son,’ the father said, ‘you are always with me, and
everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be glad,
because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again; he was lost and is
found.’”
It's impossible to entertain doubts and be
victorious in your life.
Ja. 1:5 I f any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask
God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to
him. 6 But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he
who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7
That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; 8
he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.
Doubt and unbelief restricts the power of
God.
Mat. 13:53 When Jesus had finished these parables,
he moved on from there. 54 Coming to his hometown, he began teaching
the people in their synagogue, and they were amazed. “Where did this man get
this wisdom and these miraculous powers?” they asked. 55 “Isn’t this
the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers
James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren’t all his sisters with us?
Where then did this man get all these things?” 57 And they took
offense at him.
But Jesus said to them, “Only in his hometown and
in his own house is a prophet without honor.”
58 And he did not do many
miracles there because of their lack of faith.
We are responsible to believe the Word of God
as much as those responsible to believe who saw the acts!
Mk. 16:9 When Jesus rose early on the first day of
the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven
demons. 10 She went and told those who had been with him and who
were mourning and weeping. 11 When they heard that Jesus was alive
and that she had seen him, they did not believe it.
12 Afterward Jesus appeared in a
different form to two of them while they were walking in the country. 13
These returned and reported it to the rest; but they did not believe them
either.
14 Later Jesus appeared to the Eleven
as they were eating; he rebuked them for their lack of faith and their stubborn
refusal to believe those who had seen him after he had risen.
Thomas, one of the disciples, was a miserable
man because of his unbelief.
Jo. 20:24 Now Thomas (called Didymus), one of the
Twelve, was not with the disciples when Jesus came. 25 So the other
disciples told him, “We have seen the Lord!”
But he said to them, “Unless I see the nail marks
in his hands and put my finger where the nails were, and put my hand into his
side, I will not believe it.”
26 A week later his disciples were in
the house again, and Thomas was with them. Though the doors were locked, Jesus
came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you!” 27 Then he
said to Thomas, “Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and
put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe.”
28 Thomas said to him, “My Lord and my
God!”
29 Then Jesus told him, “Because you
have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and
yet have believed.”
30 Jesus did many other miraculous
signs in the presence of his disciples, which are not recorded in this book. 31
But these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the
Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.
Faith is not a feeling, it is an act of the
will and a choice of the heart.
1 Pet. 1:3 Praise be to the God and Father of our
Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living
hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, 4 and
into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade—kept in heaven for
you, 5 who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the
coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. 6
In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while you may have had to
suffer grief in all kinds of trials. 7 These have come so that your
faith—of greater worth than gold, which perishes even though refined by
fire—may be proved genuine and may result in praise, glory and honor when Jesus
Christ is revealed. 8 Though you have not seen him, you love
him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled
with an inexpressible and glorious joy, 9 for you are
receiving the goal of your faith, the salvation of your souls.
Today is the day to reach out and act on your
faith!
Jesus, you died for me, you love me, and want
to forgive me and bring me into your presence. I believe this.
