Empowered To Stand Firm!
3/13/05
The greatest danger the Christian faces is
"Passivity!"
Let's define passivity:
motionless
lifeless
immobile
unmoving
inactive
unreceptive
not participating
Staying alert is one of the hardest things
for a Christian to do!
Mat. 26:36 Then Jesus went with his disciples to a place called Gethsemane,
and he said to them, “Sit here while I go over there and pray.” 37
He took Peter and the two sons of Zebedee along with him, and he began to be
sorrowful and troubled. 38 Then he said to them, “My soul is
overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death. Stay here and keep watch with
me.” 39 Going a little farther, he fell with his face to the ground
and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet
not as I will, but as you will.” 40 Then he returned to his
disciples and found them sleeping. “Could you men not keep watch with me for
one hour?” he asked Peter. 41 “Watch and pray so that you will
not fall into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the body is weak.” 42
He went away a second time and prayed, “My Father, if it is not possible for
this cup to be taken away unless I drink it, may your will be done.” 43
When he came back, he again found them sleeping, because their eyes were heavy.
44 So he left them and went away once more and prayed the third
time, saying the same thing. 45 Then he returned to the disciples
and said to them, “Are you still sleeping and resting? Look, the hour is near,
and the Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. 46 Rise,
let us go! Here comes my betrayer!”
This is not just a
matter of being tired--this is a spiritual knock out! It’s the same thing that
happens every day with Christian people!
Jesus made a statement in the form of a
question that has bewildered some theologians.
I think the question is pretty straight forward!
Lk. 18:1 Then Jesus told his disciples a parable to show them that they
should always pray and not give up. 2 He said: “In a certain town
there was a judge who neither feared God nor cared about men. 3 And
there was a widow in that town who kept coming to him with the plea, ‘Grant me
justice against my adversary.’ 4 “For some time he refused. But
finally he said to himself, ‘Even though I don’t fear God or care about men, 5
yet because this widow keeps bothering me, I will see that she gets justice, so
that she won’t eventually wear me out with her coming!’” 6 And the
Lord said, “Listen to what the unjust judge says. 7 And will not God
bring about justice for his chosen ones, who cry out to him day and night? Will
he keep putting them off? 8 I tell you, he will see that they get
justice, and quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will he find
faith on the earth?”
There is a tremendous battle raging against
our “spiritual fervor.”
Rom. 12:11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving
the Lord.
Mat. 10:22 All men will hate you because of me, (but if you have ever
prayed you) will be saved. No this is
not what the scripture says!
Mat. 10:22 All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm
to the end will be saved.
Mat. 24:12 Because of the increase of wickedness, the love of most will grow
cold, 13but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.
We are admonished to:
Keep Watch
Stay Alert
Don’t Grow Weary
Don’t Lose Heart
Don’t Drift Away
Let’s let the Word of God speak loud and
clear!
Keep Watch
Mat. 24:36 “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven,
nor the Son, but only the Father. 37 As it was in the days of Noah,
so it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 38 For in the days
before the flood, people were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in
marriage, up to the day Noah entered the ark; 39 and they knew
nothing about what would happen until the flood came and took them all away.
That is how it will be at the coming of the Son of Man. 40 Two men
will be in the field; one will be taken and the other left. 41 Two
women will be grinding with a hand mill; one will be taken and the other left. 42
“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your
Lord will come. 43 But understand this: If the owner of the house
had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch
and would not have let his house be broken into. 44 So you also must
be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect
him.
Mk. 13:32 “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in
heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. 33 Be on guard! Be
alert! You do not know when that time will come. 34 It’s
like a man going away: He leaves his house and puts his servants in charge,
each with his assigned task, and tells the one at the door to keep watch. 35
“Therefore keep watch because you do not know when the owner of
the house will come back—whether in the evening, or at midnight, or when the
rooster crows, or at dawn. 36 If he comes suddenly, do not let him
find you sleeping. 37 What I say to you, I say to everyone:
‘Watch!’”
Stay Alert
Eph. 6:17 Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is
the word of God. 18 And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all
kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and
always keep on praying for all the saints.
1 Thess. 5:1 Now, brothers, about times and dates we do not need to write to
you, 2 for you know very well that the day of the Lord will come
like a thief in the night. 3 While people are saying, “Peace and
safety,” destruction will come on them suddenly, as labor pains on a pregnant
woman, and they will not escape. 4 But you, brothers, are not in
darkness so that this day should surprise you like a thief. 5 You
are all sons of the light and sons of the day. We do not belong to the night or
to the darkness. 6 So then, let us not be like others, who are
asleep, but let us be alert and self-controlled. 7 For
those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get drunk at night. 8
But since we belong to the day, let us be self-controlled, putting on faith and
love as a breastplate, and the hope of salvation as a helmet.
1 Pet. 5:6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, that he
may lift you up in due time. 7 Cast all your anxiety on him because
he cares for you. 8 Be self-controlled and alert. Your
enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to
devour. 9 Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know
that your brothers throughout the world are undergoing the same kind of
sufferings.
Don’t Grow Weary
Gal. 6:7 Do not be deceived: God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows.
8 The one who sows to please his sinful nature, from that nature
will reap destruction; the one who sows to please the Spirit, from the Spirit
will reap eternal life. 9 Let us not become weary in doing
good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give
up. 10 Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all
people, especially to those who belong to the family of believers.
Heb. 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of
witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily
entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.
2 Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our
faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame,
and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. 3 Consider him
who endured such opposition from sinful men, so that you will not grow
weary and lose heart.
Don’t Lose Heart
2 Cor. 4:13 It is written: “I believed; therefore I have spoken.” With that
same spirit of faith we also believe and therefore speak, 14 because
we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead will also raise us
with Jesus and present us with you in his presence. 15 All this is
for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may
cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of God. 16 Therefore
we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly
we are being renewed day by day. 17 For our light and momentary
troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18
So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen
is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.
Don’t Drift Away
Heb. 2:1 We must pay more careful attention, therefore, to what we have
heard, so that we do not drift away. 2 For if the
message spoken by angels was binding, and every violation and disobedience
received its just punishment, 3 how shall we escape if we ignore
such a great salvation?
How tight is your grip?
It is not a grip of fear, but of determination,
steadfastness and fervor!
Phil. 3:12 Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been
made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus
took hold of me. 13 Brothers, I do not consider myself yet
to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and
straining toward what is ahead, 14 I press on toward
the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ
Jesus.
1 Tim. 6:11 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue
righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. 12
Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life
to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of
many witnesses. 13 In the sight of God, who gives life to
everything, and of Christ Jesus, who while testifying before Pontius Pilate
made the good confession, I charge you 14 to keep this command
without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, 15
which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the
King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone is immortal and who
lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor
and might forever. Amen.
What do you do?
1. Do you understand the seriousness of standing firm to the end?
2. Do you understand that you don’t have enough power to do this?
3. You need to be empowered with the Holy Spirit to stay fervent!
4. Confess that you have been passive about the things of God.
5. Confess that you have been skeptical about the baptism of the Holy
Spirit--if that is true.
6. Cry out for His empowerment.
