What Must I Do To Be Saved?
12/11/05
Acts 16:29 The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling
before Paul and Silas. 30He then
brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
The matter of salvation is
without a doubt the most serious issue set before us that we have to deal with.
Is. 64:6 All
of us have become like one who is unclean,
and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags;
we all shrivel up like a leaf,
and like the wind our sins sweep us away.
Man is so sinful it takes a
miracle of God to open our eyes to that fact.
Acts 16:16 Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met
by a slave girl who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned
a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. 17This girl followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting,
“These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be
saved.” 18She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so
troubled that he turned around and said to the spirit, “In the name of Jesus
Christ I command you to come out of her!” At that moment the spirit left her.
19When the owners of the slave girl realized
that their hope of making money was gone, they seized Paul and Silas and
dragged them into the marketplace to face the authorities. 20They brought them before the magistrates and said, “These men are
Jews, and are throwing our city into an uproar 21by advocating
customs unlawful for us Romans to accept or practice.”
22The crowd joined in the attack against
Paul and Silas, and the magistrates ordered them to be stripped and beaten. 23After they had been severely flogged, they were thrown into
prison, and the jailer was commanded to guard them carefully. 24Upon receiving such orders, he put them in the inner cell and
fastened their feet in the stocks.
25About midnight Paul and Silas were praying
and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. 26Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations
of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and
everybody’s chains came loose. 27The jailer woke up, and when he saw the
prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he
thought the prisoners had escaped. 28But Paul shouted, “Don’t harm yourself! We
are all here!”
29The jailer called for lights, rushed in
and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. 30He then
brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?”
31They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus,
and you will be saved—you and your household.” 32Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others
in his house. 33At that hour of the night the jailer took
them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were
baptized. 34The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal
before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he
and his whole family.
Repentance is not something
we choose to do whenever we want.
Genuine repentance is a choice we make in response to God’s conviction.
2 Tim. 2:24 And the Lord’s servant must not quarrel; instead, he must
be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. 25Those who oppose him he must gently instruct, in the hope
that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge
of the truth, 26and that they will
come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them
captive to do his will.
Is. 6:1 In the year that King
Uzziah died, I saw the Lord seated on a throne, high and exalted, and the train
of his robe filled the temple. 2Above him were seraphs, each with
six wings: With two wings they covered their faces, with two they covered their
feet, and with two they were flying. 3And they were calling to one
another:
“Holy, holy, holy is the LORD
Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”
4At the sound of their voices the doorposts and
thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. 5“Woe
to me!” I cried. “I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among
a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD
Almighty.” 6Then one of the seraphs flew to me with a live coal in his
hand, which he had taken with tongs from the altar. 7With it he touched my mouth and said, “See, this has
touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.”
Acts 2:29 “Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the patriarch
David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30But he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on
oath that he would place one of his descendants on his throne. 31Seeing what was ahead, he spoke of the resurrection of the
Christ, that he was not abandoned to the grave, nor did his body see decay. 32God has raised this Jesus to life, and we are all witnesses
of the fact. 33Exalted to the right
hand of God, he has received from the Father the promised Holy Spirit and has
poured out what you now see and hear. 34For David did not ascend to heaven, and yet he said,
“‘The Lord said to my Lord:
“Sit at my right hand
35 until I
make your enemies
a
footstool for your feet.”’
36“Therefore let all Israel be assured of
this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ.”
37When the people heard this, they
were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles,
“Brothers, what shall we do?”
38Peter replied, “Repent and be baptized,
every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.
And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far
off—for all whom the Lord our God will call.”
Psalms
51 For the director of music. A psalm of David. When the prophet Nathan came to
him after David had committed adultery with Bathsheba.
Ps. 51:1 Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your unfailing love;
according to your great
compassion
blot out my transgressions.
2 Wash away all my
iniquity
and cleanse me from my sin.
3 For I know my
transgressions,
and my sin is always before me.
4 Against you, you
only, have I sinned
and done what is evil in your
sight,
so that you are proved right when
you speak
and justified when you judge.
It’s a miracle of God when He
shows Himself in such a way to expose truth--truth about ourselves, truth about
Him and truth about what we should do!
Lk. 5:1 One day as Jesus was standing by the Lake of Gennesaret,
with the people crowding around him and listening to the word of God, 2he saw at the water’s edge two boats, left there by the
fishermen, who were washing their nets. 3He got into one of the boats, the one belonging to Simon,
and asked him to put out a little from shore. Then he sat down and
taught the people from the boat.
4When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Put
out into deep water, and let down the nets for a catch.”
5Simon answered, “Master, we’ve worked hard all night
and haven’t caught anything. But because you say so, I will let down the nets.”
6When they had done so, they caught such a large number
of fish that their nets began to break. 7So they signaled their
partners in the other boat to come and help them, and they came and filled both
boats so full that they began to sink.
8When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus’ knees and said, “Go away from me, Lord; I
am a sinful man!” 9For he
and all his companions were astonished at the catch of fish they had taken, 10and so were James and John, the sons of Zebedee, Simon’s
partners.
Conviction is a miracle of
God! When God puts His finger on our
heart and points out our sin and we respond to that--it’s a miracle of grace
and mercy!
Is. 55:6 Seek
the LORD while he may be found;
call on him while he is near.
7 Let the
wicked forsake his way
and the evil man his thoughts.
Let him turn to the LORD, and he will have mercy on
him,
and to our God, for he will freely pardon.
The time is coming when man
will not respond in repentance, he will curse God to His very face.
Rev. 16:1 Then I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the
seven angels, “Go, pour out the seven bowls of God’s wrath on the earth.”
8The fourth angel poured out his bowl on
the sun, and the sun was given power to scorch people with fire. 9They were seared by the intense heat and they cursed the
name of God, who had control over these plagues, but they refused to repent and
glorify him.
10The fifth angel poured out his bowl on the
throne of the beast, and his kingdom was plunged into darkness. Men gnawed
their tongues in agony 11and cursed the God of heaven
because of their pains and their sores, but they refused to repent of
what they had done.
The Bible explains the
difference between Godly sorrow and worldly sorrow.
2 Cor. 7:8 Even if I caused you sorrow by my letter, I do not regret
it. Though I did regret it—I see that my letter hurt you, but only for a little
while—9yet now I am happy, not
because you were made sorry, but because your sorrow led you to repentance. For
you became sorrowful as God intended and so were not harmed in any way by us. 10Godly
sorrow brings repentance that leads to salvation and leaves no regret, but
worldly sorrow brings death.
2 Cor. 7:8 (New Living
Translation) I am no longer sorry that I sent that letter to you, though I was
sorry for a time, for I know that it was painful to you for a little while. 9Now
I am glad I sent it, not because it hurt you, but because the pain caused you
to have remorse and change your ways. It was the kind of sorrow God wants his
people to have, so you were not harmed by us in any way. 10For God
can use sorrow in our lives to help us turn away from sin and seek salvation.
We will never regret that kind of sorrow. But sorrow without repentance is the
kind that results in death.
Unless we repent we will
perish!
Lk. 13:1 Now there were some
present at that time who told Jesus about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had
mixed with their sacrifices. 2Jesus answered, “Do you think that
these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they
suffered this way? 3I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too
will all perish. 4Or those eighteen who died when the tower in
Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others
living in Jerusalem? 5I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too
will all perish.”
