Impossibilities
7/2/06
Last week I spoke on
"Putting Limits On A Limitless God."
There is absolutely nothing that is impossible with God. He knows no limits, no boundaries, no
extremes. The word “difficult” is not
in His vocabulary.
The scripture even goes so
far as to say "I tell you the
truth, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this
mountain, ‘Move from here to there’ and it will move. Nothing will be
impossible for you." (Mat. 17:20)
But today I want to talk
about those things that are impossible.
Let’s look at our first
impossibility.
Mat.
19:23 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you the truth, it is hard for a
rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24Again I tell you, it is
easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to
enter the kingdom of God.”
25When the disciples heard this, they were greatly
astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?”
26Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is
impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
It
can’t get any plainer, it is absolutely impossible for man to save himself!
It is impossible for any
other so called God to bring salvation and eternal life!
Acts 4:12 Salvation is found
in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which
we must be saved.”
Hezekiah knew that there is
no other God except the Living God.
2
Ki. 18:17 The king of Assyria sent his supreme
commander, his chief officer and his field commander with a large army, from
Lachish to King Hezekiah at Jerusalem. They came up to Jerusalem and stopped at
the aqueduct of the Upper Pool, on the road to the Washerman’s Field. 18They called for the king; and Eliakim son of Hilkiah the
palace administrator, Shebna the secretary, and Joah son of Asaph the recorder
went out to them.
19The field commander said to them, “Tell Hezekiah:
“‘This is what the great king, the king of Assyria,
says: On what are you basing this confidence of yours? 20You say you
have strategy and military strength—but you speak only empty words. On whom are
you depending, that you rebel against me? 21Look now, you are
depending on Egypt, that splintered reed of a staff, which pierces a man’s hand
and wounds him if he leans on it! Such is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who
depend on him. 22And if you say to me, “We are depending on the LORD
our God”—isn’t he the one whose high places and altars Hezekiah removed, saying
to Judah and Jerusalem, “You must worship before this altar in Jerusalem”?
23“‘Come now, make a bargain with my master, the king of
Assyria: I will give you two thousand horses—if you can put riders on them! 24How
can you repulse one officer of the least of my master’s officials, even though
you are depending on Egypt for chariots and horsemen? 25Furthermore,
have I come to attack and destroy this place without word from the LORD? The
LORD himself told me to march against this country and destroy it.’”
26Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah, and Shebna
and Joah said to the field commander, “Please speak to your servants in
Aramaic, since we understand it. Don’t speak to us in Hebrew in the hearing of
the people on the wall.”
27But the commander replied, “Was it only to
your master and you that my master sent me to say these things, and not to the
men sitting on the wall—who, like you, will have to eat their own filth and
drink their own urine?”
28Then the commander stood and called out in
Hebrew: “Hear the word of the great king, the king of Assyria! 29This is what the king says: Do not let Hezekiah deceive you. He
cannot deliver you from my hand. 30Do not let Hezekiah persuade you to trust
in the LORD when he says, ‘The LORD will surely deliver us; this city will not
be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.’
31“Do not listen to Hezekiah. This is what
the king of Assyria says: Make peace with me and come out to me. Then every one
of you will eat from his own vine and fig tree and drink water from his own
cistern, 32until I come and take you to a land like
your own, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land
of olive trees and honey. Choose life and not death!
“Do not listen to Hezekiah, for he is misleading you when he says,
‘The LORD will deliver us.’ 33Has the god of any nation ever delivered
his land from the hand of the king of Assyria? 34Where are the gods of Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of
Sepharvaim, Hena and Ivvah? Have they rescued Samaria from my hand? 35Who
of all the gods of these countries has been able to save his land from me? How
then can the LORD deliver Jerusalem from my hand?”
36But the people remained silent and said
nothing in reply, because the king had commanded, “Do not answer him.”
37Then Eliakim son of Hilkiah the palace
administrator, Shebna the secretary and Joah son of Asaph the recorder went to
Hezekiah, with their clothes torn, and told him what the field commander had
said.
Look at Hezekiah’s
response...
2
Ki. 19:14 Hezekiah received the letter from the
messengers and read it. Then he went up to the temple of the LORD and spread it
out before the LORD. 15And Hezekiah
prayed to the LORD: “O LORD, God of Israel, enthroned between the cherubim, you
alone are God over all the kingdoms of the earth. You have made heaven and
earth. 16Give ear, O LORD, and hear; open your eyes, O LORD, and
see; listen to the words Sennacherib has sent to insult the living God.
17“It is true, O LORD, that the Assyrian
kings have laid waste these nations and their lands. 18They have thrown their gods into the fire and destroyed them, for
they were not gods but only wood and stone, fashioned by men’s hands. 19Now, O LORD our God, deliver us from his hand, so that all
kingdoms on earth may know that you alone, O LORD, are God.”
God heard Hezekiah’s prayer!
2
Ki. 19:35 That night the angel of the LORD went out
and put to death a hundred and eighty-five thousand men in the Assyrian camp.
When the people got up the next morning—there were all the dead bodies! 36So Sennacherib king of Assyria broke camp and withdrew. He returned
to Nineveh and stayed there.
37One day, while he was worshiping in the
temple of his god Nisroch, his sons Adrammelech and Sharezer (sha-re-zer) cut
him down with the sword, and they escaped to the land of Ararat. And Esarhaddon
(e-sar-had-don) his son succeeded him as king.
It is impossible for our sins
to be removed in any other way except through the blood of Jesus Christ.
Heb.
10:1 The law is only a shadow of the good things that
are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the
same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw
near to worship. 2If it could,
would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been
cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins. 3But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins, 4because it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats
to take away sins.
5
Therefore, when Christ
came into the world, he said:
“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
but a body you prepared for me;
6 with
burnt offerings and sin offerings
you were not pleased.
7 Then I
said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll—
I
have come to do your will, O God.’ “
8First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt
offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”
(although the law required them to be made). 9Then he said, “Here I
am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the
second. 10And by that will, we have been made holy through the
sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
It is impossible for our Lord
and Savior Jesus to be anything less than perfect!
Because of Jesus’ absolute
perfection death could not hold Him!
Acts
2:22 “Men of Israel, listen to this: Jesus of Nazareth was a man accredited by
God to you by miracles, wonders and signs, which God did among you through him,
as you yourselves know. 23This man was handed over to you by God’s
set purpose and foreknowledge; and you, with the help of wicked men, put him to
death by nailing him to the cross. 24But God raised him from the
dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for
death to keep its hold on him. 25David said about him:
“‘I saw the Lord always before me.
Because he is at my right hand,
I will not be shaken.
26 Therefore
my heart is glad and my tongue rejoices;
my body also will live in hope,
27 because
you will not abandon me to the grave,
nor will you let your Holy One see decay.
28 You
have made known to me the paths of life;
you will fill
me with joy in your presence.’
29“Brothers, I can tell you confidently that the
patriarch David died and was buried, and his tomb is here to this day. 30But
he was a prophet and knew that God had promised him on oath that he would place
one of his descendants on his throne. 31Seeing what was ahead, he
spoke of the resurrection of the Christ, that he was not abandoned to the
grave, nor did his body see decay. 32God has raised this Jesus to
life, and we are all witnesses of the fact.
It is impossible for God to
lie.
Heb.
6:13 When God made his promise to Abraham, since there was no one greater for
him to swear by, he swore by himself, 14saying, “I will surely bless
you and give you many descendants.” 15And so after waiting
patiently, Abraham received what was promised.
16Men swear by someone greater than themselves, and the
oath confirms what is said and puts an end to all argument. 17Because
God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very
clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an
oath. 18God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in
which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take
hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged. 19We have
this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner
sanctuary behind the curtain, 20where Jesus, who went before us, has
entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of
Melchizedek.
Jer.
1:12 “ ...I am watching to see that my word is fulfilled.”
Mat.
24:35 Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
Jo.
18:9 This happened so that the words he had spoken
would be fulfilled: (this is repeated over and over throughout the Word of
God).
Jo.
18:32 This happened so that the words Jesus had
spoken indicating the kind of death he was going to die would be fulfilled.
2
Cor. 1:20 For no matter how many promises God has
made, they are “Yes” in Christ.
It is impossible to please
God without faith.
Heb.
11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because
anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those
who earnestly seek him.
When a person dies without
having Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior it is impossible to have another
chance!
Heb. 9:27 Just as man
is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28so
Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will
appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are
waiting for him.
