Radical Salvation--Radical
Change!
10/8/06
1 Tim. 1:12 I thank Christ
Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful,
appointing me to his service. 13Even though I was once a
blasphemer and a persecutor and a violent man, I was shown mercy
because I acted in ignorance and unbelief. 14The grace of our Lord
was poured out on me abundantly, along with the faith and love that are in
Christ Jesus.
15Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full
acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the
worst. 16But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me,
the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an
example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. 17Now
to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for
ever and ever. Amen.
Paul was a man who was
radically changed!
Ananias was no different than
many of us today. We acknowledge that
God can save anyone, but deep down we really have our doubts about some.
Acts 9:10 In Damascus there
was a disciple named Ananias. The Lord called to him in a vision, “Ananias!”
“Yes,
Lord,” he answered.
11The Lord told him, “Go to the house of Judas on
Straight Street and ask for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying. 12In
a vision he has seen a man named Ananias come and place his hands on him to
restore his sight.”
13“Lord,” Ananias answered, “I have heard many reports
about this man and all the harm he has done to your saints in Jerusalem. 14And
he has come here with authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call
on your name.”
15But the Lord said to Ananias, “Go! This man is my
chosen instrument to carry my name before the Gentiles and their kings and
before the people of Israel. 16I will show him how much he must
suffer for my name.”
17Then Ananias went to the house and entered it. Placing
his hands on Saul, he said, “Brother Saul, the Lord—Jesus, who appeared to you
on the road as you were coming here—has sent me so that you may see again and
be filled with the Holy Spirit.” 18Immediately, something like
scales fell from Saul’s eyes, and he could see again. He got up and was
baptized, and 19after taking some food, he regained his strength.
I have titled today’s message
“Radical Salvation--Radical Change.”
1 Sam. 22:1 David left Gath
and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and his father’s
household heard about it, they went down to him there. 2All those
who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered around him, and he
became their leader. About four hundred men were with him.
The New Testament
counterpart....
Mat. 9:10 While Jesus was
having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and “sinners” came and
ate with him and his disciples. 11When the Pharisees saw this, they
asked his disciples, “Why does your teacher eat with tax collectors and
‘sinners’?”
12On hearing this, Jesus said, “It is not the healthy
who need a doctor, but the sick. 13But go and learn what this means:
‘I desire mercy, not sacrifice.’ For I have not come to call the righteous, but
sinners.”
Let’s look again at these men
that gathered themselves around David.
1 Sam. 22:1 David left Gath
and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and his father’s
household heard about it, they went down to him there. 2All those
who were in distress or in debt or discontented gathered around him, and he
became their leader. About four hundred men were with him.
Look what happened to this
group of misfits....
2 Sam. 23:8 These are the
names of David’s mighty men:
Jo-sheb-Bas-she-beth, a
Ta-ke-mo-nite, was chief of the Three; he raised his spear against eight
hundred men, whom he killed in one encounter.
9Next to him was Eleazar son of Dodai (do-die) the
Ahohite (a-hoe-hite). As one of the three mighty men, he was with David when
they taunted the Philistines gathered at Pas Dammim for battle. Then the men of
Israel retreated, 10but he stood his ground and struck down the
Philistines till his hand grew tired and froze to the sword. The LORD brought
about a great victory that day. The troops returned to Eleazar, but only to
strip the dead.
11Next to him was Sham-mah son of Agee (A-G) the Hararite
(ha-ray-rite). When the Philistines banded together at a place where there was
a field full of lentils, Israel’s troops fled from them. 12But
Sham-mah took his stand in the middle of the field. He defended it and struck
the Philistines down, and the LORD brought about a great victory.
13During harvest time, three of the thirty chief men
came down to David at the cave of Adullam, while a band of Philistines was
encamped in the Valley of Rephaim. 14At that time David was in the
stronghold, and the Philistine garrison was at Bethlehem. 15David
longed for water and said, “Oh, that someone would get me a drink of water from
the well near the gate of Bethlehem!” 16So the three mighty men
broke through the Philistine lines, drew water from the well near the gate of
Bethlehem and carried it back to David. But he refused to drink it; instead, he
poured it out before the LORD. 17“Far be it from me, O LORD, to do
this!” he said. “Is it not the blood of men who went at the risk of their
lives?” And David would not drink it.
Such
were the exploits of the three mighty men.
18A-bish-a-i the brother of Joab son of Zeruiah was
chief of the Three. He raised his spear against three hundred men, whom he
killed, and so he became as famous as the Three. 19Was he not held
in greater honor than the Three? He became their commander, even though he was
not included among them.
20Benaiah
son of Jehoiada was a valiant fighter from Kabzeel, who performed great
exploits. He struck down two of Moab’s best men. He also went down into a
pit on a snowy day and killed a lion. 21And he struck down a
huge Egyptian. Although the Egyptian had a spear in his hand, Benaiah went
against him with a club. He snatched the spear from the Egyptian’s hand and
killed him with his own spear. 22Such were the exploits of Benaiah
son of Jehoiada; he too was as famous as the three mighty men. 23He
was held in greater honor than any of the Thirty, but he was not included among
the Three. And David put him in charge of his bodyguard.
Jesus takes the common to do
uncommon things
Let’s look at a table
waiter....
Acts
6:1 In those days when the number of disciples was increasing, the Grecian Jews
among them complained against the Hebraic Jews because their widows were being
overlooked in the daily distribution of food. 2So the Twelve
gathered all the disciples together and said, “It would not be right for us to
neglect the ministry of the word of God in order to wait on tables. 3Brothers,
choose seven men from among you who are known to be full of the Spirit and
wisdom. We will turn this responsibility over to them 4and will give
our attention to prayer and the ministry of the word.”
5This proposal pleased the whole group. They chose
Stephen, a man full of faith and of the Holy Spirit; also Philip, Proc-o-rus,
Ni-ca-nor (ni-kay-nor), Timon (tie-mon), Parmenas (parm-a-nas), and Nicolas
from Antioch, a convert to Judaism. 6They presented these men to the
apostles, who prayed and laid their hands on them.
7So the word of God spread. The number of disciples in
Jerusalem increased rapidly, and a large number of priests became obedient to
the faith.
8Now Stephen, a man full of God’s grace and power, did
great wonders and miraculous signs among the people. 9Opposition
arose, however, from members of the Synagogue of the Freedmen (as it was
called)—Jews of Cyrene and Alexandria as well as the provinces of Cilicia and
Asia. These men began to argue with Stephen, 10but they could not
stand up against his wisdom or the Spirit by whom he spoke.
11Then they secretly persuaded some men to say, “We have
heard Stephen speak words of blasphemy against Moses and against God.”
12So they stirred up the people and the elders and the
teachers of the law. They seized Stephen and brought him before the Sanhedrin. 13They
produced false witnesses, who testified, “This fellow never stops speaking
against this holy place and against the law. 14For we have heard him
say that this Jesus of Nazareth will destroy this place and change the customs
Moses handed down to us.”
15All who were sitting in the Sanhedrin looked intently
at Stephen, and they saw that his face was like the face of an angel...........
Acts
7:51 “You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just
like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit! 52Was there
ever a prophet your fathers did not persecute? They even killed those who
predicted the coming of the Righteous One. And now you have betrayed and
murdered him—53you who have received the law that was put into
effect through angels but have not obeyed it.”
54When they heard this, they were furious and gnashed
their teeth at him. 55But Stephen, full of the Holy Spirit, looked
up to heaven and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing at the right hand of
God. 56“Look,” he said, “I see heaven open and the Son of Man
standing at the right hand of God.”
57At this they covered their ears and, yelling at the
top of their voices, they all rushed at him, 58dragged him out of
the city and began to stone him. Meanwhile, the witnesses laid their clothes at
the feet of a young man named Saul.
59While they were stoning him, Stephen prayed, “Lord
Jesus, receive my spirit.” 60Then he fell on his knees and cried
out, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.” When he had said this, he fell
asleep.
What we often consider junk,
God considers His prize possession!
Lk.
8:26 They sailed to the region of the Gerasenes, which is across the lake from
Galilee. 27When Jesus stepped ashore, he was met by a
demon-possessed man from the town. For a long time this man had not worn
clothes or lived in a house, but had lived in the tombs. 28When he
saw Jesus, he cried out and fell at his feet, shouting at the top of his voice,
“What do you want with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, don’t
torture me!” 29For Jesus had commanded the evil spirit to come out
of the man. Many times it had seized him, and though he was chained hand and
foot and kept under guard, he had broken his chains and had been driven by the
demon into solitary places.
30Jesus asked him, “What is your name?”
“Legion,”
he replied, because many demons had gone into him. 31And they begged
him repeatedly not to order them to go into the Abyss.
32A large herd of pigs was feeding there on the
hillside. The demons begged Jesus to let them go into them, and he gave them
permission. 33When the demons came out of the man, they went into
the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and was
drowned.
34When those tending the pigs saw what had happened,
they ran off and reported this in the town and countryside, 35and
the people went out to see what had happened. When they came to Jesus, they
found the man from whom the demons had gone out, sitting at Jesus’ feet,
dressed and in his right mind; and they were afraid. 36Those who had
seen it told the people how the demon-possessed man had been cured. 37Then
all the people of the region of the Gerasenes asked Jesus to leave them,
because they were overcome with fear. So he got into the boat and left.
38The man from whom the demons had gone out begged to go
with him, but Jesus sent him away, saying, 39“Return home and tell
how much God has done for you.” So the man went away and told all over town how
much Jesus had done for him.
In the Bible who wrote more
about love than any other person?
Jo. 13:23 One of them, the
disciple whom Jesus loved, was reclining next to him.
Jo. 20:2 So she came running
to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one Jesus loved....
Jo. 21:7 Then the
disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter....
Jo. 21:20 Peter turned and
saw that the disciple whom Jesus loved was following them.
In John’s epistles, he
mentioned love in 33 verses.
Was John always this man of
great love?
Mk. 3:16 These are the twelve
he appointed: Simon (to whom he gave the name Peter); 17James son of
Zebedee and his brother John (to them he gave the name Boanerges
(bo-a-ner-gees), which means Sons of Thunder);
Lk. 9:51 As the time
approached for him to be taken up to heaven, Jesus resolutely set out for
Jerusalem. 52And he sent messengers on ahead, who went into a
Samaritan village to get things ready for him; 53but the people
there did not welcome him, because he was heading for Jerusalem. 54When
the disciples James and John saw this, they asked, “Lord, do you want us to
call fire down from heaven to destroy them?” 55But Jesus turned and
rebuked them, 56and they went to another village.
Yes, Jesus came to radically
save and change lives!
Those who are “self
sufficient” are the ones who are the hardest to be saved!
Mat.
19:16 Now a man came up to Jesus and asked, “Teacher, what good thing must I do
to get eternal life?”
17“Why do you ask me about what is good?” Jesus replied.
“There is only One who is good. If you want to enter life, obey the
commandments.”
18“Which ones?” the man inquired.
Jesus
replied, “‘Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give
false testimony, 19honor your father and mother,’ and ‘love your
neighbor as yourself.’”
20“All these I have kept,” the young man said. “What do
I still lack?”
21Jesus answered, “If you want to be perfect, go, sell
your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven.
Then come, follow me.”
22When the young man heard this, he went away sad,
because he had great wealth.
23Then Jesus said to his disciples, “I tell you the
truth, it is hard for a rich man to enter the kingdom of heaven. 24Again
I tell you, it is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for
a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.”
25When the disciples heard this, they were greatly
astonished and asked, “Who then can be saved?”
26Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is
impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
And then there are those who
are smarter than God....
1 Cor. 1:18 For the message
of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being
saved it is the power of God. 19For it is written:
“I will
destroy the wisdom of the wise;
the intelligence of the intelligent I
will frustrate.”
20Where is the wise man? Where is the scholar? Where is
the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world? 21For
since in the wisdom of God the world through its wisdom did not know him, God
was pleased through the foolishness of what was preached to save those who
believe. 22Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks look for wisdom, 23but
we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to
Gentiles, 24but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks,
Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God. 25For the foolishness
of God is wiser than man’s wisdom, and the weakness of God is stronger than
man’s strength.
26Brothers, think of what you were when you were called.
Not many of you were wise by human standards; not many were influential; not
many were of noble birth. 27But God chose the foolish things of the
world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the
strong. 28He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised
things—and the things that are not—to nullify the things that are, 29so
that no one may boast before him. 30It is because of him that you
are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our
righteousness, holiness and redemption. 31Therefore, as it is written:
“Let him who boasts boast in the Lord.”

change in your own life--don’t put any limitations on our Mighty Living God!
